The Burden of Publishing

October 11, 2006

I knew this was going to happen. I haven’t written anything in weeks. I was supposed to describe my experiences of being in a foreign land (Japan), an almost alien world, where the language and culture are so different, that I would have an almost neverending list of exploits to share with the rest of the world. And I do I guess. That’s not the problem.

I think that there are actually multiple problems. I’ve tried to describe them below.

1. Too much early pressure

I have never written a blog before. I went to a decent college, wrote papers, etc., so I’m not a terrible writer, but as other bloggers have written, blogging is different than writing a paper. It’s far more frequent to be as thorough as a paper, but it can’t be complete stream of consciousness ranting either (that is if you want to be respected).

2. Too much trying to be an expert in something that I’m not

…yet. At least that was to be the case with my discussion of perhaps esoteric, Japanese linguistics-related posts. I just ain’t there yet. Not in grad school, no research done: not there. Plus, isn’t it kind of weird to mix this stuff in with the tech news? After all, that was supposed to be the main focus of this blog anyway. Tech news. As if there weren’t enough people talking about tech anyway. Who do you like anyway? I kind of like DaringFireball. It has nothing to do with the name of this blog either.

3. The Burden of Publishing

Ok, finally we get down to perhaps the main reason for my non-updatityness; the fact that I actually have to sit here and write. Here on my butt, struggling to add clarity to the noise, picking this over all other alternatives (including laundry and so on), here taking my time I’m finally doing this… This is what it takes.

Anyway, That’s it. Still gonna write. Just do it. I spent over a week writing this entry in bits by the way. No more of that either; perfection, if not unattainable, is at the very least not immediate.
